Voice of the Ancestors

Voice of the Ancestors Ghana–Latvia Cultural Exchange

Voice of the Ancestors is a cross-cultural music and heritage initiative that unites the ancient musical traditions of Ghana and Latvia through artistic collaboration, cultural exchange, and shared storytelling.

The project seeks to demonstrate that although communities may be separated by geography, language, and history, music remains a universal language through which ancestral wisdom, identity, and human connection can be preserved and shared.

By bringing together Ghanaian artists and Latvian folk musicians, Voice of the Ancestors creates a living dialogue between cultures, revealing common values of community, spirituality, resilience, and belonging.

The purpose of Voice of the Ancestors is to:

  • Preserve and celebrate traditional musical heritage.
  • Create meaningful collaboration between African and European artists.
  • Encourage intercultural understanding through music and storytelling.
  • Introduce audiences to indigenous instruments, rhythms, and vocal traditions.
  • Inspire younger generations to reconnect with their cultural roots.
  • Build sustainable cultural partnerships between Ghana and Latvia.
  • Demonstrate the power of music as a tool for cultural diplomacy and global connection.

Voice of the Ancestors is a cultural exchange initiative connecting Ghanaian and Latvian musical traditions through collaboration, storytelling, and the preservation of ancestral heritage.

This framing aligns strongly with the project’s positioning on WOMEX, the Ghana-Latvia cultural exchange objectives, and the wider mission of RocAfrik to use music as a vehicle for cultural understanding and international collaboration.

(01) Project Introduction

Across oceans and generations, music carries stories that words alone cannot tell.

Voice of the Ancestors is a unique cultural exchange bringing together Ghanaian artists and the acclaimed Latvian folk ensemble Auļi in a journey of discovery, collaboration, and shared heritage.

Born from a meeting at WOMEX and nurtured through the partnership between Apprise Music & Media, Abiana, and Auļi, the project explores the connections between West African rhythms and Baltic musical traditions.

Through collaborative performances, cultural immersion, and creative dialogue, artists from different backgrounds discover common ground in the voices of their ancestors—voices that continue to shape identity, community, and artistic expression.

This is more than a musical collaboration.

It is a celebration of heritage.

A conversation between cultures.

A reminder that while our traditions may sound different, the human spirit behind them speaks the same language.
